Tae Kwon Do is an ancient form of hand to hand combat originating from Korea. It has been practiced there for thousands of years and has been known by several different names. The modern name of Tae Kwon Do came into being during the 1950's when several schools of martial arts were united under one banner.
In recent times sport Tae Kwon Do has been the most widely recognised image of the art. It is important to remember that this is not the complete art but has been modified for competition. At Codner's Tae Kwon Do we teach a complete system of self defence which includes punches, locks, sweeps, grappling, weapons defence and general awareness. We are constantly revising and updating our syllabus to deal with the modern enthusiast but traditional martial arts and everything it has to offer is still at the at the core of what we do.
Children as young as 4 can start as long as they have some concentration levels. We are not a play centre or nursery and the young ones are expected to start to follow instructions, even though a fair amount of leeway will be given. You are also never too old to start. We can accommodate all ages and fitness levels in a way that makes you feel part of the group and allows you to make progress at your own pace.
Our classes are run in a friendly social way, but have an underlying serious attitude to practice which creates a good atmosphere for learning. Our small classes (ideally around 12 children or 8 adults) means that tutoring by the instructor is more personal than in larger groups, and our students do get more attention. Classes in the martial art of Tae Kwon Do offer an excellent physical workout for the heart and lungs and is ideal for muscle toning, balance, coordination and flexibility. Through the rigours and discipline of our classes a mental toughness is developed which leads to increased confidence and self belief. Classes typically consist of basic movements (blocks, kicks, punches), forms (set patterns), self defence, sparring, strength and conditioning exercises.
Our philosophy is to create an indomitable spirit amongst our students with an aim of not just creating good fighters, but also individuals who seek self-improvement, have respect for others and their property, who have determination, perseverance, self control and life skills.
Our students are graded by belt colour and this system of progression is a good motivation to students to work up the grades. It proves to them that they can achieve goals as long as they maintain their discipline and focus.
Gradings normally occur outside of class hours at the main Codner's Tae Kwon Do Academy in Hackney. The times for gradings can be found on the announcements page.
